Art ~ We do it because we love it!

We were quite sad when Barb told us that she closed Sketch Tuesday for the summer.

On  her recommendation, I looked through previous sideshows for themes and topic ideas and jotted some of these on my calendar for the next 3 months.

We have sketched every week. We all love it!

Today my kids asked if anything would go on the internet.  Even though there is no official slideshow, they asked me to post our recent Sketch Tuesday pictures on my blog.

And so here’s our slideshow:

I encourage you to regularly do art with your children.  Although Sketch Tuesday is not formal art, I found that it has boosted us when we come to do “real” art.  Sketching a simple observation or idea only takes a half hour (or even less with younger children).   The children readily try new materials and techniques and are quite confident with the art materials we use each week.

So, even though Barb has taken a break (and we trust you are having a wonderful restorative time, Barb! 🙂 ), continue to do simple weekly sketch assignments!

Blessings,

Sketch Tuesday ~ Something Spicy!

What a great topic!

This week’s assignment due Monday, May 23, 2011:

Sketch a spice or a spice jar.

We took out our spices and I undid my rope bags of spices with cinnamon sticks, peppercorns, whole cloves and bay leaves, and chillies.  I have dried chillies all wrinkled on their string, and fresh picked chillies on the windowsill drying.  These whole spices were more appealing to sketch and paint than the spice bottles.

I asked the girls to paint their pictures this week.  It is good to practice painting often.  I think that when they use felt-tipped pens they enjoy the quick colourful results, but we have found our pictures discolour in time.

Here are our paintings for this week:

Miss L9's spices

Miss. K11's chillies in acrylics

Miss K11 took out the acrylic paints and worked confidently on her own and mixed the colours and highlights entirely without my advice or help.  I was stunned with the results, and even more excited by her own pleasure in her work!

Maybe List of Things To Do With Mom- ART!

I often write about taking part in Sketch Tuesday!  And I have seen that it is such a positive activity.

I want to share this sweet testimony for this week’s art:

My 2 older daughters went away for a short school break, leaving my youngest daughter (8 years old) at home alone with me.  She rarely is at home without her sisters and so she made a …

“Maybe list of things to do while the others are gone”

And on the reverse, she wrote:

  1. try the letter set    √√  (those letters you rub to transfer on to the page)
  2. play a set of cards
  3. play a board game  √
  4. watch a movie together  √√

I was truly delighted to paint Sketch Tuesday ~ A Fruit Salad with her.  (Note to self: add the word “Tuesday” to this week’s spelling list)

Her list is a homeschooling-mom’s pride!  I love it that she CHOOSES to do those things which I value in our homeschool as her personal fun time with me!

You will see all the ticks to show what we did during the 4 days!

Her great passion is reading books, even though she really has to work hard at it.  So we read together often and finished 2 of her readers – a great accomplishment!

When I asked her what she enjoyed the most, she said that playing a board game and winning 3x in a row against me was the BEST!  I forget that she (as the youngest child) often is over-ruled when chosing board games.  Playing her choice of game was already such a joy.  And beating me three times – well that was the cherry (smile … excuse the fruity pun) on the top!

Perhaps we should institute a “Youngest Child Choses Day” each month?  What do you do for your youngest ones?

Have a wonderful week!

Blessings,

Recent Sketch Tuesday Pictures

Letter H for "Heidi" by Miss.L (8)

We aim to take part in as many Sketch Tuesday assignments as possible.

  • because we love to draw, paint, sketch – all of us – especially me!

  • because the topics are fun!

  • because it is quick – maybe half an hour or a bit more

  • because it is easy – we chose our own favourite medium and approach

  • because it is informal

  • because no one judges, evaluates, or comments on our work  …

well … we do chat about our work when we sit in the kitchen and look at our art, because our art gallery is on the double door cupboard …

  • because we all have gained confidence to draw and paint since we do it so often

  • because we have time

  • because we can use whatever we have without too much/ if any research

Here are our recent pictures:

What are your reasons for joining each week?

Sketch Tuesday ~ Something to cure a cold

Sketch something to cure a cold

We have a medicine box with all the basics, but before I reach for pills and syrups, I usually use some natural, healthy alternatives;

lemon and honey

garlic

Echinacea

vitamin C

Viral Guard

We laid all the cures out on a table and each of us sketched.

Here are the pictures:

Barb-Harmony Art Mom says,

“This week’s assignment due Monday, November 15th, 2010:
Sketch something you use to treat a cold or the flu.

All sketchers are welcome and there is no need to sign up. Participate as much as possible and make sketching a weekly habit. Send in your sketches in jpg format and mail them to: sketchtuesday@yahoo.com by Monday, November 15th and I will include them in Tuesday’s slideshow.”

After participating in Sketch Tuesday for about a year, I have seen that my children ~

  • relish participating
  • do their sketches with no formal help or advice from me
  • quickly come up with a mental picture of what they want to sketch
  • are almost always happy with their first results
  • want to display their art
  • happily talk about their art and others’
  • technically create full, balanced sketches
  • add detail, overlapping, horizon lines, contour lines and shading

Hope you will take part.  See you at the slideshow!

Sketch Tuesday ~ Something From China

Here are our sketches for this past week’s theme ~

Sketch Something from China

We all sketched during the weekend during some free time.

The girls used imagery from “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”  and “House of Flying Daggers”  DVD covers for inspiration.

I put out some pieces of my Chinese dinner service for a still life and really enjoyed spending my time using watercolour pencils to bring a painterly feel to my sketch without losing detail.

As always Barb of Harmony Art Mom encourages everyone to take part and email her the jpg. sketches to sketchtuesday@yahoo.com by Monday, November 15th and she will include them in Tuesday’s slideshow.

This week’s new theme is ~

Sketch something you would use to treat a cold or the flu

See you at the slideshow!
